Galactic Mistake?

Bryan Singer, director of the X-Men Franchise, is set to helm a Battlestar Galactica movie. Apparently, this movie, although still on the ground floor, and has yet to find a writer, will stand independent of the wildly acclaimed television series and will be a re-imagining of the original series in the 1970’s.
The question is why?
We already have a re-imagining of the 1970’s television show, and quite frankly, it was awesome. It might be the most important work in science fiction television in the last 20 or so years. Singer thinks he can do better? Because I saw what he did to the last Superman movie, and I was not impressed. To me, it just seems like another way to milk more money out of an already tapped out franchise, with the SyFy Channel ordering a season of Caprica, where else can he go from here without upsetting devoted BSG fans?
