John Hughes died today in New York of a heart attack at 59. This longtime filmmaker directed and/or wrote some of the most beloved movies in American pop culture, such as Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club and Weird Science. He will be greatly missed.
In honor of his amazing talent and vision, I bring you my top 5 most favorite Hughes Movie Moments
5. She's Having a Baby- The Birth Scene. She's Having a Baby for me has always been very underrated. I loved watching Kevin Bacon accurately depict a thirty-something married man who takes his beautiful life and wife for granted, causing a descent into selfishness and unhappiness. But the powerful scene when his wife goes into labor and nearly dies in the process causing his realization that material wealth and freedom could never equal any life with out her is heartbreaking. I cry every time I watch it.
4. The Breakfast Club- Library Bonding. This movie could be very emotional and somewhat depressing at times, but somewhere in the middle all characters begin to bond, smoking up in the audio booth, giving makeup makeovers and awesomely dancing atop extremely high railings. Yes, everyone cries at least once as they begin to open up, but I always loved when they threw their cares to the wind and danced it out.
3. Home Alone- Overcoming Fears. I could have easily picked the scene where Kevin fends off the two inept burglers in inventive and amusing ways. But to me the story wasn't just about him defending his home as it is about overcoming his childhood fears, such as the scary older man from down the street. He wanders into a church on Christmas Eve and winds up sitting with the elderly neighbor that he had always been so scared of. A touching heart to heart reveals that he's really just a grandfather who spends his retirement alone because of a fight he had with his grown son, who no longer talks to him. He goes to see his granddaughter sing at the church because it is the only way he could see her. More touching is Kevin smiling at the end when he witnesses him reuniting with his estranged family.
2. Pretty In Pink- Ducky Being Awesome. I don't know why at the end of this movie, no matter how many times I watch it, always sigh and get annoyed that Andie never chose Ducky over that Blaine. His name was Blaine for Pete's sake! I know the reason that I would have chosen him, besides his adorable face and undying admiration, it was his amazing lip-sync/dance to Otis Redding's "Try a Little Tenderness" at the record store. Sometimes I don't even watch the movie, I just youtube.com the video of his dancing. Instant mood lifter.
1. Ferris Bueller's Day Off- The Parade. Hands down my favorite movie of all time. I wanted to marry Ferris Bueller as a kid and I still do. John Hughes brought us the tale of a the coolest guy in school, who was actually NICE as well as being funny and daring. This movie never gets old, and even though the clothes are out of style, Ferris is more than just the coolest guy in school, he's also the person you always wanted to have for a best friend. Who else would have the guts to do this?
