Snap Judgment on the New Syfy Show Warehouse 13
The newly re branded Syfy channel debuts it's new show Warehouse 13. I didn't expect much to be honest, this part X-Files part Moonlighting type show's previews weren't exactly eye catching to me. However, it's summer and besides True Blood and So You Think You Can Dance I'm out of good shows to watch so I figured I would give it a try. To my surprise, I found myself thoroughly entertained.
The Negatives: This show lacks any of the hard hitting emotion of Battlestar Galactica, there is no social commentary, and it's not terribly dynamic. And the stuck with each other partnership of the two main characters doesn't feel fresh. Mika, the female protagonist is the neurotic secret service agent who lives by the book and stuffs her mouth with food when she's stressed. Pete, the male lead is a fun, laid-back secret service agent, who always goes with his gut. They are the yin and yang to each other, polar opposites who are unceremoniously transferred from their high profile jobs guarding the President to a backwoods South Dakota warehouse that just happens to store a treasure trove of mystical objects deemed by the government to be too dangerous for the general public. We've seen this kind of paring before of the uptight female agent (Dana Scully, Temperance Bones) and the sexy, devil may care partner (Fox Mulder, David Boreanez). Just once I would like to see a fun, carefree female lead with a Type A male lead. Just once.....
The Positives: It's quirky. The dialogue is decent, and it could get better deeper into the season. As a future Archivist I was positively giddy at the Warehouse itself, almost as exciting as when The Beast gave Belle his Library in Beauty and the Beast. That Library was awesome. Obviously, this place isn't real, but if it was, I would fight a man in order to work there. It's entertaining fare, the missions they are sent on to retrieve dangerous objects are downright campy. It needs more characters and it could be truly interesting. Pete is reminiscent of a young David Boreanez while Mika looks a bit like Christy Turlington, so the eye candy is good. This show is the opposite of the problem that the X-Files had and what Buffy did so well. At it's best, the X-Files was dark and spooky with hints of humor. At it's worst it was all darkness and no humor. This show is almost all light fluff and fun without the darkness that grounds it and makes the audience invested in the characters. Buffy was magical in that it could be both funny and dark and balanced those two things well. But this is just the pilot, but I hope that if enough viewers tune in for ratings, it could develop into something beyond just light fluff.
My advice- Give it a try.
