Eric & Bill Square Off
Eric & Bill Square Off

This episode was a tantalizing set up for the last three episodes of the season, setting all the chess pieces in place. And it's Eric for the Queen!!!!

We return to Godric's post-modern vampire lair for the only party on True Blood that rivals a Mariann orgy. Lukinator decimates himself with the bomb and in the process, Stan, a few vamps and some humans. But Jason is safe, he was standing behind a fireplace and Sookie was only momentarily stunned, as she was standing behind a Viking vampire. Actually, she's laying underneath Eric, who shielded her with his body. Eric tells Bill that Sookie is fine, he protected her and then warns him to catch the few Fellowship members who are getting away. Effectively getting Bill out of his way, Eric feigns certain death if Sookie doesn't suck the silver bullets he caught in her defense out of his body. Totally grossed out but also feeling indebted since he saved her life, she literally "sucks it up" and cringes as she sucks the bullets out of his skin, accidentally ingesting his blood in the process. Bill returns, horrified by the fact that Sookie has been totally manipulated by Eric, while Eric smiles in complete disregard of their disgust, having achieved what he desired. A blood bond with Sookie. This just solidifies the fact that you don't leave your women alone with Eric. Where he goes, there will always be women.

Back at the hotel, Bill and Sookie commiserate over Eric's awesome deception. Bill tries to comfort her that he just used her inherent goodness to his advantage. While Sookie carries on about how upset she is that Eric will now be able to feel her feelings and know where she is, Bill tells her another more upsetting consequence, that she could have ahem sexual feelings towards him as a result. This is an interesting point that I feel really wasn't made in the first season, when Sookie and Bill were exchanging blood. Were some of Sookie's feelings towards him magnified by their blood connection and did Bill himself use it for his own favor? Is Bill really the gentleman he likes Sookie to think he is?

Jessica and Hoyt continue to be frickin adorable. Hoyt fights the power i.e his mother, by demanding that she meet and accept Jessica. He also points out that she doesn't just hate vampires, she hates everything, including Methodists, people who have lots of kids, and African Americans (Shhh, that's a secret!). This plan does not work. Jessica leaves Merlotte's in tears after his mother points out that she can never have children. I'm thinking that Hoyt may be moving in at the Compton House.

Back at the Stackhouses, Eggs and Tara are freaked out by their domestic abuse bruises, but just wind up sitting around complaining about their loss of memory. Mariann, bored as I am at their complaining, finally speaks the first amount of truth that she's only been hinting at with all her self improvement bullcrap. She describes how blackouts were a way to lose the trappings of civilization and culture in order to commune with the gods. Bloody Mary anyone?

Bon Temps, as a whole is in shambles, half the town is in jail. Including Sam, who changes into a fly in order to escape Mariann, who comes looking for him at the jail and instead sets free all her merry revelers.

Sookie and Jason bond in the hotel room, Jason apologizing again for his foolishness in one of those soft grey hotel robes. HBO, listen to me, I want one of those. Please make them available on the website... and they better have Hotel Carmilia embroidered on them. Jason lists all the reasons he was beloved by Bon Temps, and yes, "sex abilities" is on the list, lol. But he still felt like no one wanted to know or love the "real Jason" until the Newlins. Sookie whines about how everyone thought she was the town nutjob. The Stackhouses bond over their specialness, Gran's death and have a good cry. For a brother and sister, they never have ANY scenes together, I hope this changes next season. After the bonding they watch the Newlins battle Nan Flanigan on the news over the bomb, the Newlin's are also fighting amongst themselves now, taking petty swipes at each other while trying to take on Nan (Sarah to Steve- I hate your hair). I have to mention that Steve is still sporting a red mark in the middle of his forehead from Jason's paintball, tee hee.

Meanwhile, LaFayette has a fit when Tara comes in to Merlottes with Eggs sporting bruises which he instantly accuses Eggs of giving her. Lots of "fronting" and a whole lot of "he aint never gonna change" laters, Eggs is dragged out of the bar by Tara when he and LaFayette come to blows.

Back at the hotel, all of my wildest dreams are coming true. Most times I hate when television shows don't give me a real love scene between two characters, they give you a fake dream sequence. But Sookie's dream, featuring her and Eric laying naked in bed flirting on satin sheets is awesome because It's real, yet not real at the same time. I have this impression that Eric is communicating with her telepathically, coming to her in this dream. And this dream is almost better then the real thing, because they are talking to each other and interacting in a way that they never had before, as if they were friends and lovers. Eric is 1000 more times charming and disarming all at once, opening up to her in ways that he can't with anyone else, kissing her hands, teasing her about how he thinks she'll make an excellent vampire, while Sookie flirts back about how she wouldn't because she loves being tan. He tells her he loves her hidden greediness with a smile... he actually smiles.... suggesting everybody thinks your a darling don't they, but you're ruthless aren't you. They mutally agree that they had each other all wrong, Sookie thought he was empty and cold, while he thought she had no sense of humor, while Lorena sits at the end of the bed and asks "What about Bill?". Sookie reply's that she loves Bill of course, but we all know, he's rapidly becoming an afterthought. Sookie whispers "There's love in you" and he rolls on top of her replying, "only for Sookie". Sookie awakes as Eric is promising her, this is the beginning. I found for the first time in a long time, that I really enjoyed Sookie's character (btw, Sookie and Eric had waaaay more chemistry then Sookie and Bill, I really loved them together). She was fun and endearing, perhaps Eric is trying to show her what her future could be like, if she chose him?

LaFayette and Tara's mother crash the Stackhouses while Tara, Eggs and Mariann are playing strip poker. Mariann tries to tempt Lettie May with vodka, but she bravely resists and LaFayette demands Tara come with them. Instead Tara and Eggs go black eyed and attack LaFayette and Lettie May. LaFayette (newly healed with Eric's blood) gives Eggs a beat down and throws Tara over his shoulder, abducting her from the Mariann's House of STDs.

Back at the hotel, Nan Flanigan is pissed that Godric has created such a PR shitstorm that she demands his resignation as Sheriff and gives his title to Isabel. Godric could care less, he has plans to repent. He was originally hoping that the Fellowship would burn him, but now he just plans to do it himself. Eric is angry enough at his demotion for the both of them, he actually has to be held back by Isabel and Bill so he won't attack Nan. The whole time Sookie is just sitting there giving Eric goo-goo eyes. And Bill notices.

Mariann storms into the bar and demands Sam Merlotte, everyone goes black eyed all around. She demands them to bring him to her. Sam meanwhile shows up at the door of Andy Bellefleur's hotel, naked and no longer in fly form.

Godric is determined to go into the sun atop the roof of the hotel. But first Bill feels the need to settle a score with Eric, even though Eric is clearly in the throes of agony knowing that his maker is about to kill himself. Bill proceeds to punch Eric in the face for deceiving Sookie into drinking from him. I wonder what Bill would do if he knew Eric was already banging her telepathically? The idea that you could have an affair with another man in your dreams and Bill would never know is, well tantalizing. Eric takes the punch and replies simply, it's done, he's already part of her now. Eric won and Bill never even had a chance. Then Eric bounces, he has his maker to stop from killing himself.

Sookie informs Bill that she needs to go to Godric. Part of me wonders if she is feeling Eric's fear for him or if it's just a sense of obligation over him saving his life.

Up on the roof, Eric and Godric have a heart wrenching argument with Eric trying to talk him down, but dawn is coming. Eric threatens to keep him alive by force, but Godric replies that he could do that but that would be cruel. Instead, Eric starts weeping and damn near begs, on his knees, for Godric to rethink. Eric sobs while Godric repeats, Father, Brother, Son... and asks for him to let Godric go. Eric even offers not to let him die alone, which is confusing because is Eric offering to sacrifice himself as well? It seems that he is, and Sookie Stackhouse is watching the scene, witnessing his boundless love and loyalty to Godric. You can't help but wonder if Sookie is thinking that if she just gave in, if maybe Eric would show her that kind of love one day. Godric demands as his maker, that he go back down to his room. Blood tears stream down his face as he leaves his master and passes by Sookie along the way. She reaches out to his hand, and assures him that she'll stay with Godric, as long as it takes.

It doesn't take long. Godric (I feel like I hardly knew ya) and Sookie stand on the roof and discuss God. Godric wonders if God will punish him, and Sookie assures him that God does not punish, he forgives. Then Godric asks if she will care for Eric, and she shakes her head, sighing, as if anyone could care for Eric. Then like a proud father of a mischievous son, he grins that he had a hand in creating what Eric is today. Sookie doubts that any one person could have made Eric what he is. She asks if he's afraid, and as smoke rolls off him, he exclaims that he's full of joy. Sookie begins to cry, while he marvels in surprise that after 2000 years he thought he had seen it all, and never would have believed that a human would be standing with him at his end. It's a touching scene. The light sets him aflame and he burns without a word.
